Organizer: Mr. Mark Thompson, is a director of Northwest Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (NW PARC), recent Past President of the BC Association of Professional Biology, Adjunct Professor, University of Northern British Columbia, Department of Ecosystem Science and Management, and an ecologist with EcoLogic Consultants Ltd. Mr. Thompson has been researching amphibian populations for 25 years throughout northern British Columbia. During this time, he has worked in partnership and in close collaboration with multiple First Nations bands, communities, and peoples.

Description: This workshop is designed as an open forum to foster new partnerships between western scientists and indigenous peoples. We will discuss and learn ways that we may better communicate, coordinate, and understand relations between indigenous peoples and western scientists. We believe that we can gain knowledge and new ways of thinking about conservation science by organizing our efforts collectively. This is an opportunity to better understand our common interests in conservation and shared concerns for nature.

Exercises and discussion among workshop participants and the leader will emphasize:

• Communications (including ethical space),

• Indigenous and Western science knowledge systems,

• Relational values,

• Monitoring,

• Training, and

• Conservation through reconciliation.
