Leader: A collaborative effort by USDA-APHIS Wildlife Services and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, with presentation by both agencies and WSU Extension.

Objective(s): Introduce and explain principles and approaches to dealing with wildlife damage and conflicts, including some specific examples in different settings, in a day-long interactive workshop to help participants understand techniques to address such conflicts as professionals.

Main Topics: Presentations and discussions will emphasize principles in planning and implementing these programs, with specific discussions on:

• Attitudes toward wildlife and use of conservation communication

• Identification of damage and the species responsible

• Determination of the scope of the problem

• Techniques and tools to address various conflicts

• Considerations of target and nontarget species

• Assessment of environmental conditions contributing to conflict

• Consideration of potential biological, physical, economic, and social impacts

• Recognizing potential legal restrictions or requirements

• Consideration of costs of damage management The course will focus on preferred non-lethal conflict reduction methods, and how agencies approach escalation to use methods of control resulting in lethal removal. Significant attention will focus on avoiding the problem (e.g., through husbandry or habitat management) before conflicts begin or escalate as a best approach, in recognition that certain habituated animal behaviors may limit effectiveness of such methods if not initiated early enough.

Participants will be provided an understanding of the different roles and authorities of the respective agencies. They will be provided with an overview of frequent situations and management considerations in conflict settings such as urban, forestry, agriculture, airports, and endangered species habitats. Applicable Audience: Primarily students and young professionals (but may include other biologists and managers) that desire an understanding of this important and often controversial work. Audience would hopefully understand the programs well enough to be able to discuss these issues with fellow biologists and the public.

Prior Preparation: Participation only requires an interest in the subject matter. Laptops, smart devices, and other media connectivity are not required in the workshop.
